ADVENTURES WITH JESUS - BASIC INFORMATION

“Adventures with Jesus”, known elsewhere as the Religious Education, or Sunday School, is a program

of Catholic Education in faith. Besides education, in the course of the program the students will receive

three sacraments: First Communion (2nd Grade), Reconciliation (2nd Grade), and Confirmation (8th

Grade). The reception of the sacrament of Confirmation concludes the program and the entire initiation

process into the Catholic faith. If your child is already older and has not yet received a sacrament that

should have received by now, or even has not been baptized, our Staff along with the Pastor will do our

best in order to accommodate the situation in the best possible way. We will speak to you personally

and discuss all the options.

The most important policy at St. Joseph’s is safety and security. Our entire personnel has gone through

a special course called “Virtus” that focuses on the children’s well-being and protection against any child

lure practices. Moreover, we have to comply with strict Diocesan policies in that matter and we have to

prove it on an annual basis.

Our classes take place on Saturdays of the school year at St. Joseph Community Center (the house directly

across the street from the church) and begin at 9:30 AM with a simple breakfast for all students.

The cost of the breakfast is included in your annual fee. The classes themselves begin at 10:00 AM and

take an hour. You are always welcome to stay over, visit the class and talk to us, however from 10:00 to

11:00 AM the door of the Center will be locked. We are one family and we would like you and your child

to feel the same way. The Center’s phone number is (718) 658-1412. You can pick up your child at 11:00

AM. We ask that you pick your child promptly. There will be $5.00 late fee if your child is not picked up

by 11:15 AM.

We are providing necessary handbooks for all students. The price of the handbook for your child is

already included in the annual fee.

Reception of the sacraments is always something very exciting and highly anticipated by all families,

and our Church Family as well. In order for that to happen the right and most beautiful way, much prayer

and support must be given to each student by you, us, and our Parish. Students who repeatedly fail

to attend the classes will not be able to receive the sacraments. For us, just as much as for you, it is a

serious thing and we want to show all the students the importance of these special moments in their

lives. Please make sure that make us aware of any special circumstances that might prevent your child

from attending regularly. Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion takes 2 years and the

child has to be at least 7 years old. No child will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation without at least 2

years of instruction and preparation.

The cost of the program is $60 per child annually and must be paid in full by September 30, if you

have three children or more taking part in the Adventures with Jesus, you will not be charged more

than $100 total, which includes all breakfasts and handbook. You may pay with cash, check (made to St.

Joseph Church), or credit/debit card. If you prefer, you can make your payment in installments.

As practiced everywhere, every child attending the program must have a Certificate of Baptism and

Birth Certificate on file with us by September 30, 2019. A copy would suffice.

The deadline for registration for the 2019-2020 School Year is May 18, 2019.

CONFIRMATION FOR CHILDREN IN OUR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SYSTEM

Our “Adventures with Jesus” program a.k.a. Religious Ed is about to introduce a significant change, specifically when it comes to the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation. It used to be a practice in our Parish that upon graduation from the 8th grade (and Religious Ed program), those who were ready and prepared to the receive the Sacrament, would be confirmed sometime in the 8th grade. This is to change. Current 8th grade (graduating in 2018) will observe no changes whatsoever. The following class (set to graduate in 2019) will not be confirmed until 2020. In other words: we are moving the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation to the first grade of high school. We have been working on it for quite some time now, both in our Parish and Deanery. We have observed in Parishes of our Deanery that it works much better, especially when it comes to realizing what really happens during Confirmation. Also, the graduation in the 8th grade takes a huge toll on a child’s ability to process all these important thresholds at that time. Moving it to the 1st grade of high school significantly improves this ability. This decision is final and we hope it will help our children to better live their faith.

Practically speaking: the 8th grade in 2019 will conclude the regular “Adventures with Jesus” Program and will enter a much different, more “youth-like” Confirmation Program that will have its meetings once a month. —Fr. Chris
